From Middle High German vēlen, vælen, from Old French falir, faillir, from Vulgar Latin *fallīre, from Latin falere (“to deceive; to mistake; to be unseen”). Doublet of Sette Comuni dialect véelan (“to fail; to err”). Cognate with German fehlen.
