Etymology[edit]

From Middle High German verbërn, from Old High German ferberan, *firberan, *firberan, from Proto-West Germanic *fraberan, from Proto-Germanic *fraberaną (to hold back, restrain; to bear, endure); equivalent to vor- +‎ bèeran. Cognate with English forbear, Gothic 𐍆𐍂𐌰𐌱𐌰𐌹𐍂𐌰𐌽 (frabairan).
