From Proto-Tocharian *wäp- (compare Tocharian B wāp-), from Proto-Indo-European *webʰ- (to weave), also the source of Old English wefan (whence English weave), Sanskrit उभ्नाति (ubhnāti, entwine), Persian بافتن (bâftan), Ancient Greek ὑφαίνω (huphaínō, weave), Albanian vej.
