Old Polish[edit]
Etymology[edit]
Unknown. The construction makes it possible to derive the word from Proto-Slavic *ǫtъpьje, *ǫtьpьje, suggesting a connection with the hypothetical verb *vъtьpati (“to stuff”). Alternatively borrowed from Middle High German wambe, wampe.
