Compound of warna (colour) +‎ bahasa (language), calque of Balinese ᬯᬃᬦᬩᬲ (warna basa, register, literally variety of language), from Sanskrit वर्ण (varṇa, colour) +‎ भाषा (bhāṣā, language).
