German[edit]

Etymology[edit]

From Middle High German warten, from Old High German wartēn, from Proto-West Germanic *wardēn, from Proto-Germanic *wardāną. Cognate with Old Saxon wardōn, Swedish vårda, English ward.

Pronunciation[edit]

  • IPA(key): /ˈvartən/, [ˈvaʁ.tn̩], [ˈvaɐ̯-], [ˈvaː-], [ʋ-], [-tən]
  • (file)
  • (file)
  • (file)
  • Hyphenation: war‧ten
  • Homophone: waten (some speakers)

Verb[edit]

warten (weak, third-person singular present wartet, past tense wartete, past participle gewartet, auxiliary haben)

  1. (intransitive) to wait (for) [+ auf (accusative)]
  2. (transitive) to maintain (chiefly a machine, e.g. a car or heating)

Usage notes[edit]

  • The intransitive sense of warten originally governed the genitive case (ich warte deiner instead of ich warte auf dich). Today this usage is generally archaic.
