     Wij vinden het bizonder belangrijk om de jengd^{[sic – meaning jeugd]} van ons land ook te betrekken in onze aktiviteiten om de burgers van Suriname het gevoel voor gemeenschapszin bij te brengen. Meestal komt het in alle lagen van de bevolking voor, dat wij allen nog volstrekt leven in de roes van WINTI WAI LANTI PAI, erwijl^{[sic – meaning terwijl]} men zich allerminst realiseert, dat lanti gevormd wordt door de gehele bevolking van dit land.

     We attach great importance to involving our country's young people in our activities to instil a sense of community in the citizens of Suriname. Usually, in all layers of the population, we all are still completely intoxicated with winti wai, lanti pai, while people do not realise at all that the state is constituted by the entire population of this country.

Het ‘winti wai, lanti pai’ principe moest, als men wat bereiken wilde, totaal worden uitgebannen.

     There is no money, the government always said. They were not pursuing a cultural policy anyway! And nothing would ever come of this aspect of culture, unless a private individual made extreme efforts and even made sacrifices. If anything was to be achieved, the winti wai, lanti pai principle had to be totally eliminated.

     Whenever Jopie Pengel returned from yet another 'consultation round' in The Hague, it was a regular occurrence: Pengel on arrival at Zanderij airport waving a suitcase. "A moni doro!" he would shout, "the money is here!" And the assembled crowd cheered and contentedly boarded the buses back to Paramaribo. Satisfied because, once again, little could go wrong; after all, "winti wai, lanti pai", "never mind, the country pays".
