wye switch (plural wye switches)

  1. (rail transport, US) A railroad switch, having a Y shape, in which one line splits into two lines that diverge at equal angles.
    • 1909, Interstate Commerce Commission, Accident Adjustment Report[1], page 30:
      When the wye switch is opened the home signal is automatically set at danger and the distant signal at caution.
