Etymology[edit]

From earlier ensunya (lard) by a process of palatalisation (i.e. *enxunya), dissimilation (i.e. *enxulla), and misdivision (i.e. *en xulla). Ultimately from Latin axungia (axle grease). Cognate to Galician enxunlla, Spanish enjundia and Portuguese enxúndia.
