From Middle English yolden (yielded), from Old English golden, ġegolden (yielded), from Proto-Germanic *guldanaz, past participle of Proto-Germanic *geldaną (to yield, pay). Cognate with Dutch gegolden, German gegolten, Icelandic goldinn.
