Etymology[edit]

The sense 'lock' is inherited from Proto-Slavic *zamъkъ. The sense ‘castle’ is a semantic loan from Middle High German sloz (lock, keep) (cf. German Schloss), itself a semantic loan of Latin clūsa (lock, fort, fortification).
