From Middle Dutch sintvloed. Originally equivalent to now obsolete zin or zene (permanent, forever) +‎ vloed (flood), but folketymologically reinterpreted as the compound zonde (sin) +‎ vloed (flood). Cognate to German Sintflut, also Sündflut.
