Particularly: “Non-Sino-Vietnamese reading of Chinese (to make up for, to compensate, SV: để). Compare 抵押 (dǐyā, to mortgage; to provide security; to put up collateral). Possibly unrelated to nợ, which is cognate to Chut [Mày] panɯ⁴ (Babaev & Samarina, 2018) and is an n-infixed form of bợ (to borrow temporarily).”
