Vietnamese[edit]

Etymology[edit]

đen (black) +‎ tuyền () (entire, total); the second element is the expected Sino-Vietnamese reflex of Sinitic (quán), fossilized in this compound. In other, more transparent compounds, tuyền had been replaced by the form toàn spread from Northern Vietnam.
