Etymology[edit]

Probably from Arabic جَيِّد (jayyid, good) or a related form. Compare جَواد (jawād, bountiful, generous) and جَوْد (jawd), جائِد (jāʔid, copious rain). As a possible semantic influence compare also Italian beni (goods, means, riches).
