Etymology[edit]

Pertaining to aħmar (red). Probably an extended form of Arabic حُمَر (ḥumar), حُمْرة (ḥumra), which are also used of certain kinds of soil. Compare Moroccan Arabic حمري (ḥamri, red earth).
