Ancient Greek[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Maybe from Proto-Indo-European *dem-, the same root of δέμω (démō, to build) and δόμος (dómos, house, dwelling). The word has also been connected to κρήδεμνον (krḗdemnon, headband), suggesting a derivation from the same root of δέω (déō, to bind).
