Ancient Greek[edit]

Alternative forms[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Comparing the word with ἱδρώς (hidrṓs), γέλως (gélōs), ἔρως (érōs), Schwyzer concludes an original s-stem. Furnée takes the alternative form given by Hesychius as proof of Pre-Greek origin, a hypothesis that convinces Beekes.
