Ancient Greek[edit]

Alternative forms[edit]

Etymology[edit]

The formation is similar to κανθύλη (kanthúlē), κοτύλη (kotúlē) and σχενδύλη (skhendúlē). Güntert suggests a cross of κόνδυλος (kóndulos, swelling) with κορύνη (korúnē, club, cudgel) but this is incorrect. The prothetic "σ-" and the suffix "-ῡλ-" lead to a Pre-Greek origin.
