Etymology

From Proto-Indo-European *ḱerdʰ- (“herd”), like Proto-Germanic *herdō (“herd”), Proto-Slavic *čerda (“file, herd”) and Sanskrit शर्धस् (śardhas, “multitude, troop”). Connection of Welsh cordd (“group”) is less probable, as this may also derive from Proto-Celtic *koryos (“troop, tribe”).
