Etymology[edit]

Contracted form of λαγώειος (lagṓeios, of a hare), from λαγώς (lagṓs, hare), ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *(s)leh₁g- (weak, feeble). Compare Latin laxus, Sanskrit लङ्ग (laṅga, lame), Proto-Germanic *lakaną.
