Etymology[edit]
A modern or mediaeval αντιδάνειο (antidáneio, “repatriated loanword”), inherited from Byzantine Greek μπουκάλιν (mpoukálin),[1] from Venetian bocal[2] -Italian boccale (“jug, bottle”), or otherwise from Sicilian buccali (“jug, bottle”)-, from Latin baucalus, from Koine Greek βαύκαλις (baúkalis, “container used for the cooling of wine”); probably of Central Atlas Tamazight[3] or Egyptian origin.[4]
