Etymology[edit]
Katharevousa learned borrowing from Koine Greek προχοΐς (prokhoḯs, “chamber pot”), diminutive of Ancient Greek πρόχους (prókhous, “ewer, wine jug”) by semantic influence of the latter; itself from προ- (pro-) + χοῦς (khoûs, “measure of liquid capacity”), ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰew-.
