From Byzantine Greek σῠ́νορον (súnoron, “border, boundary, limit”) from Koine Greek σῠ́νορος (súnoros, “conterminous with, neighboring, bordering”), equivalent to συν- (syn-, “with”) + όριο (ório, “boundary”).
