Inherited from Proto-Turkic *yāyïk; compare Bashkir Яйыҡ (Yayıq), Chuvash Ейĕк (Ejĕk), Nogai Яйык (Yayık), Tatar Җаек (Cayek), Turkish Yayık. and also the loans Arabic جيخ (Jayiḵ), Ancient Greek Δάϊξ (Dáïx), Δαΐχ (Daḯkh), Γεήχ (Geḗkh), Middle Mongol [script needed] (Jayaq) and obsolete Russian Яик (Jaik).
