Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Turkic *(i)aĺa- (to eat), from Proto-Turkic *(i)aĺ (food, meal).[1]

Cognate with Old Uyghur [script needed] (aša-, to eat);[2] Kumyk ашамакъ (aşamaq, to eat); Karachay-Balkar ашаргъа (aşarğa, to eat); Yakut аһаа (ahaa, to eat), etc.
