Bulgarian[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Inherited from Old Church Slavonic вощага (voštaga), of unclear origin. BER mentions (under its derivative въстегарка (vǎstegarka)):

  • Possibly borrowed from some derivative of Ancient Greek βαστάζω (bastázō, to bear, to lift);
  • Corrupted form of what would be въз- (vǎz-) +‎ те́жа (téža, to weigh) +‎ (-a) (one would expect a nasal vowel and no palatalization within the root in this case).

Compare also Lithuanian vazgóti (to stretch).

Noun[edit]

вощага (voštagaf (archaic)

  1. stick, crook, whip (type of tool)

Usage notes[edit]

Only derivatives are still used in the contemporary language.
