Russian[edit]

Etymology[edit]

From где (gde) +‎ -то (-to).

Pronunciation[edit]

  • IPA(key): [ˈɡdʲe‿tə]
  • (file)

Adverb[edit]

где́-то (gdé-to)

  1. somewhere
    Я где́-то купи́л э́ту пи́ццу.
    Ja gdé-to kupíl étu píccu.
I bought this pizza somewhere (in particular).
    Где́-нибудь мо́жно купи́ть пи́щу?
    Gdé-nibudʹ móžno kupítʹ píšču?
Is there anywhere to buy food?
  2. (by extension, colloquial) somewhere around, about, approximately (not exactly)
    Я его́ не ви́дел где́-то уже полго́да.
Ja jevó ne vídel gdé-to uže polgóda.
I haven't seen him for somewhere around half a year already.

Usage notes[edit]

  • N.B. — the particle -то (-to) imparts a sense of indefiniteness similar to English some. The form где-то is associated with affirmatives (like somewhere), while где́-нибудь (gdé-nibudʹ) is usually associated with questions and negatives (like anywhere).
