Etymology[edit]
From Proto-Slavic *gǫgrica, probably from Proto-Slavic *ǫgrъ (“vermin, serpent, creep”) + -ица (-ica) (with initial *g- similar to Bulgarian гъсени́ца (gǎseníca, “caterpillar”) from Proto-Slavic *ǫsěnica).
