From Proto-Permic *karni, from an Indo-Iranian language, ultimately from Proto-Indo-Iranian *kr̥náwti. Compare Sanskrit करोति (karoti) and Avestan 𐬐𐬆𐬭𐬆𐬥𐬀𐬊𐬌𐬙𐬌 (kərənaoiti). Cognates include Komi-Zyrian карны (karny).
