From Proto-Turkic *gebde (body, torso). Appears to have spread via a medieval written language (Chagatai).

Cognate with Tatar гәүдә (gäwdä), Kazakh кеуде (keude), Kyrgyz көөдө (köödö), Uzbek gavda, Azerbaijani gövdə, Turkish gövde, Crimean Tatar kevde, etc.
