Etymology[edit]

Inherited from Proto-Slavic *lipa. By surface analysis, ли́па (lípa) +‎ -ец (-ec), referring to linden trees which bloom at this time of year. Cognates include Polish lipiec (July), Ukrainian липень (lypenʹ), Belarusian ліпень (lipjenʹ), and Serbo-Croatian lipanj (June).
