Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Slavic *obpona, cognate with Polish opona (tire, mater) and Czech opona (theater curtain). Probably from Proto-Indo-European *peh₂n- (cloth, fabric), cognate with Latin pannus, Ancient Greek πῆνος (pênos, web), and Proto-Germanic *fanô.
