Etymology[edit]

From *čirik "rotten", from the verbal stem čiri- "to rot, decay", from Proto-Turkic *čẹr (rot; disease).

Cognate with Tatar черек (çerek), Kazakh шірік (şırık), Kyrgyz чирик (cirik), Southern Altai чирик (čirik), Uzbek chirik, Uyghur چىرىك (chirik), Azerbaijani çürük, Turkish çürük (rotten), etc.
