Inherited from Old Ruthenian смѣти (směti, to dare, to be allowed), from Old East Slavic съмѣти (sŭměti, to dare, to be allowed), from Proto-Slavic *sъměti. Cognate with Bulgarian сме́я (sméja), Old Church Slavonic съмѣти (sŭměti), Slovene smeti, Slovak smieť, Czech smět.
