From Proto-Turkic *toŋ- (to freeze). Cognate with Kazakh тоңу (toñu), Kyrgyz тоңуу (toŋuu), Crimean Tatar toñmaq, Azerbaijani donmaq, Turkish donmak, Turkmen doňmak, Uzbek toʻngmoq, Khakas тоорға (toorğa), Shor тоң-, Western Yugur toŋ-, etc.
