From Proto-Turkic *čolpan. Cognate with Kazakh шолпан (şolpan), Kyrgyz чолпон (colpon), Karachay-Balkar чолпан (çolpan), Kumyk чолпан (çolpan), Tatar чулпан (çulpan), Turkish çolpan, Tuvan шолбан (şolban), etc.
