From Common Kypchak *ičäk (intestine, gut), from an earlier form *ičägü (instestine, gut), from Proto-Turkic *ič (interior; bowels, stomach).

Cognate with Old Uyghur [script needed] (ičägü, viscera, bowels); Tatar эчәк (eçäk), Kazakh ішек (ışek), Kyrgyz ичек (icek); Uzbek ichak, Uyghur ئۈچەي (üchey), Southern Altai ичеге (ičege), Turkmen içege, Khakas ічеге (ìçege, intestine).
