Inherited from Proto-Slavic *jarovъ, from *jaro (spring). Constructed as if from *яр (*jar) +‎ -ово́й (-ovój); compare dialectal яр (jar, heat, fire), Old East Slavic ꙗра (jara, spring). First attested in the 14th century.
