From Proto-Turkic *kadgu (sorrow, grief; concern).

Immediately cognate with Old Turkic [script needed] (qadğu); Old Turkic [script needed] (qaðğu), [script needed] (qajğu, sorrow, grief); Kazakh қайғы (qaiğy), Kyrgyz кайгы (kaygı); Uzbek qaygʻu, Uyghur قايغۇ (qayghu, sorrow, grief), Turkish kaygı, Azerbaijani qayğı (care; worry, concern, anxiety), etc.

Possibly related to Proto-Turkic *kay- (turn; pay attention), as attested in Middle Turkic qay- "~to pay attention; be compassionate", Yakut хайыс- (qayıs-, to turn), Khakas хайарға (xayarğa, to pay attention), Turkish kayırmak (to protect, favor).
