Alternative forms[edit]
Etymology[edit]
According to Ačaṙyan, a native Armenian formation meaning “darling, dear, having high value”, composed of *գարի (*gari) + -ա- (-a-) + գին (gin, “price, value”), the unattested *գարի (*gari) presumably meaning “expensive” or “heavy” and inherited from the Proto-Indo-European ancestor of Ancient Greek βαρύς (barús, “heavy”), βάρος (báros, “weight”), Latin gravis (“heavy”), etc. The problem is that the Proto-Indo-European root for these is reconstructed with an initial *gʷ- (see *gʷréh₂us), which in Armenian would have given կ- (k-). Ačaṙean suggest that we may be dealing with a *gʷ → *gʷʰ sound change.
