Etymology[edit]

Martirosyan considers the basic meaning to be “the (wooden) frame of a loom with the main threads as the basis of the fabric”. Possibly connected with Khotanese [script needed] (ysba, reed) and together with it inherited from Proto-Indo-European *Hos(d)-b(ʰ)-. Alternatively, an Iranian loan.
