Old Armenian[edit]

Etymology[edit]

The origin is uncertain. According to J̌ahukyan, either reduplicated from *աղ- (*ał-) or compounded from *աղ- (*ał-) +‎ -ա- (-a-) +‎ մող (moł). In any case, according to him *աղ- (*ał-) goes back to Proto-Indo-European *h₂el- (to wander, roam).
