Etymology[edit]

Uncertain.

Müller derives from hypothetical Middle Persian *tašīkēnak, from Middle Persian *taršikaina (drier), a supposed descendant of Proto-Indo-European *ters- (dry). For the formation he compares տաճկինակ (tačkinak). For the suffix compare Iranian borrowings -կէն (-kēn) and -ակ (-ak).

Ačaṙyan and Hübschmann reject Müller's proposal and leave the origin open.

According to J̌ahukyan, probably a borrowing from some unknown Iranian source.

The form *թաշկէն (*tʻaškēn) listed in Baṙgirkʻ haykazean lezui is back-formed by this dictionary from the supposed diminutive թաշկինակ (tʻaškinak) (as if թաշկէն (tʻaškēn) + -ակ (-ak)) and is unattested, according to Ačaṙyan.
