Etymology[edit]

From a Middle Iranian word of the form *hančār. Compare Persian هنجار (hanjâr, straight road; way, rule, law; custom), Sanskrit संचार (saṃ-cāra, walking about, wandering; way, path), composed of the prefix सम् (sam, together, with) and चरति (carati, to move). For the relation of the senses “road” and “intelligence” compare Persian راه (râh, road; intellect).
