From Proto-Indo-European *per-. Among the cognates compare especially Gothic 𐍆𐌰𐌹𐍂𐍂𐌰 (fairra, far away from), Sanskrit परस् (paras, beyond, further, off, away), and Ancient Greek πέρα (péra, beyond).
