The origin is uncertain. Perhaps from Proto-Indo-European *syō(u)ro- and cognate with Sanskrit स्याल (syāla, wife's brother), Old East Slavic шурь (šurĭ), шуринъ (šurinŭ, wife’s brother) (Russian шурин (šurin)).
