From Classical Syriac ܐܣܩܦܐ (ʾesqəp̄āʾ). Doublet of սկիհ (skih) from the same source. The reason for the alternate -ա- ~ -ի- (-a- ~ -i-) reflexes is unknown.

In the Bible translation, corresponds to Classical Syriac ܐܣܩܦܐ (ʾesqəp̄āʾ) and Ancient Greek κρατήρ (kratḗr).
