From the root ס־נ־כ־ר־ן (s-n-k-r-n), via various European languages ultimately from Ancient Greek συγχρονίζω (sunkhronízō), from σύνχρονος (súnkhronos), a compound of συν- (sun-, plus) +‎ χρόνος (khrónos, time; delay).
