Etymology[edit]

From Middle High German veizte f (fat, fatness), from Old High German feizitī (fat, fatness), derived from feizit (fat), from Proto-West Germanic *faitid. The metathesis in Yiddish (-ts in stead of -st) probably under influence of פֿעט (fet), from the same Proto-Germanic word through Middle Low German.
